Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Also known as Borivali National Park, is a protected area situated in the Northern part of Mumbai. It is situated on the Eastern side of the suburb of Borivali and to the South of this park lies the Aarey milk colony. It covers an area of 104 km.square. It is noted as one of the major National Parks situated within a metropolitan city and is also marked as one of the world's most visited park. The rich flora and fauna in the park, attracts 2 million visitors each year. It is also considered to be a bird watcher's paradise.

This park houses: -

  • 1000 species of plants.

  • 251 species of migratory, land and water birds.

  • 50,000 species of insects.

  • 40 species of mammals.

  • 38 species of reptiles.

  • 9 amphibians.

  • 150 species of butterflies.

  • And a large variety of fish.

Extra

The very famous caves, the Kanheri Caves are also a site to be seen when you visit this park. Discovered by the Buddhists in the 1st century BCE, the area was once a settlement meant for travellers. This park also consists of 2 lakes: - Tulsi ( a leaf used as a medicine ) lake and Vihar lake. There is a toy train ride for kids that will take you around the park and there is also a Lion Safari that is worth going.
